ST. CLOUD — Dean Bowyer continued to work his magic and the Minnesota State baseball team continued to roll on Monday as the Mavericks swept a doubleheader from St. Cloud State 7-5 and 10-2 in a North Central Conference doubleheader.

The two victories pushed head coach Bowyer’s career record to 1,021-564-10. No other coach in Minnesota has totaled that many collegiate victories. Gary Grob of Winona State retired in 2002 with 1,020 wins.

“It’s nice, but it’s kind of funny because I don’t think I’ve been coaching that long,” said Bowyer, who had 74 coaching wins in his first four years at Minot State before taking over the MSU program in 1977. “It’s a reflection of the type of ballplayers we get to play here. They love the game, they care about each other and that leads to success on the field.

“(This milestone) is kind of special because the group of guys we have really helped our program turn a corner. Four years ago we had one of the worst seasons we’ve ever had and we brought in a bunch of guys who are still here and now they’re doing great.”

On Saturday, April 28, the Department of Athletics will host a banquet honoring Bowyer as the seventh coach in NCAA Division II history to reach the 1,000-career-victories mark.

The event, in the Centennial Student Union Ballroom, is open to the public, and the cost is $10 per person. A social hour is scheduled from 5- 6 p.m., and the banquet will start at 6. Those who wish to attend are asked to RSVP the Department of Athletics at (507) 389-6111.

Bowyer achieved the 1,000-win mark when the Mavericks downed American International University 10-6 on March 10.

Minnesota State (30-7) has now won at least 30 games in eight of the last nine seasons. The Mavericks (10-1 in the NCC) travel to Fayette, Iowa, on Wednesday to play Upper Iowa in a nonconference doubleheader.
