The Managing Sporting Events class raised $1,775 for scholarships during the inaugural Sport Management Scholarship Scramble April 20 at Terrace View Golf Course.
More than 30 alumni, students, faculty, staff and community members participated in the scramble, raising money for the Sport Management Scholarship Foundation. The class will provide two $250 scholarships -- one female and one male -- to students who exemplify excellence in the classroom. The remainder of the funds were placed in a savings account to build the Sport Management Scholarship Foundation.
Members of the class, taught by Jon Lim, agreed to host an 18-hole scramble as their semester-long project. The students created an event logo, Web site and brochure. They also developed five sponsorship levels – title, gold, hole, purple, cart – and marketed their product to individuals and businesses.
Class members made formal presentations to local businesses -- and learned to continue to move forward in the face of occasional rejection.
“The students learned how to organize a successful event starting from a great idea,” Lim said. “They have built relationships, and most importantly, a strong foundation for the future of this event.”
Shane Bowyer, owner of the new Sports Institute -- a Mankato training and research facility designed to enhance athlete performance -- donated funds for the title sponsorship, including event naming rights, a link to Sports Institute’s home page on the class event Web site, and a banner featuring the company's logo.
Additional event sponsorship was provided by Katolight, which served as a hole sponsor, and Campus Recreation, which contributed as a purple and cart sponsor.
The event included a silent auction and raffle of items including passes to the Mankato MoonDogs Dog Pound, a Nick Punto autographed baseball, passes to the 2007 Minnesota Vikings Draft Party, Minnesota Twins tickets, a Chester Taylor autographed picture frame, a Green Bay Packers autographed football and a Dean Bowyer autographed bobblehead.
