Ashton Schuster of Maple Lake, Minn.,has been selected as the 2007 Meredith Scholar. The scholarship will pay Schuster’s tuition, fees and much of her day-to-day college expenses for four years.

Schuster’s selection for the prestigious award was announced by John E. Frey, dean of the Minnesota State Mankato College of Science, Engineering & Technology.

Schuster, daughter of John and Paula Schuster, is the 12th Meredith Scholar since the program’s inception. She joins four current Minnesota State Mankato students who are receiving four-year scholarship assistance: Rachel Busch of Mason City, Iowa, Eric Hanson of Faribault, Minn., and Abigail Wagner of West Des Moines, Iowa.

The Meredith Scholars program was created in 1995 by Dr. Donald Meredith of Mankato, co-founder of Mankato’s Orthopaedic & Fracture Clinic PA, and his wife Marjorie.

All Meredith Scholars get full, four-year scholarships and support for daily living expenses. The scholarship is awarded annually to an exceptional Minnesota State Mankato first-year student who plans an education in mathematics or the natural sciences. Candidates must demonstrate outstanding academic achievement in high school (upper 10 percent of his or her class), and must score in the 90th percentile of the ACT college prep exam.

Meredith Scholars receive significant financial support so they don’t need to get a job while in college, allowing them to spend their energy and time studying, learning and fully engaging in the Minnesota State Mankato learning community.

Natural science and mathematics is the program’s focus because the Merediths want to improve U.S. math and science student achievement in comparison with other countries.

Dr. Meredith, a retired orthopaedic surgeon, was raised in rural North Dakota and has spent all of his professional life serving the people of south central Minnesota. His interest in helping the youth of the region, and his gratitude for his own public education, prompted him to establish the scholarship at Minnesota State Mankato.
