Nine students recently received Community Service Awards from the College of Social & Behavioral Science.
The annual awards recognize exemplary community or university service performed by students. To be eligible, an undergraduate or graduate student must have declared a major in the college. Award recipients:
Emily Bittner organized babysitting volunteers for the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Family Weekend, collected donations and raised funds for mailing care packages to U.S. troops, organized a Halloween Party for Theresa House residents, and organized a women’s clothing drive for the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center and CADA House.
Jeffery Brand chaired the Anthropology Club’s donations drive for the last two years. Donations collected by the club were sent to the Cheyenne River Sioux in South Dakota.
Joshua Colvin tutored English as a second language students in mathematics, science, English and social studies in Waseca, Mankato, Bloomington and Hennepin County.
Shannon Finnegan served as a volunteer staff member at Celebrate Me Week, a self-esteem camp for children. As a camp volunteer she set up events, worked with an acting troupe and assisted with administrative duties. She also was a volunteer coach for Theatre Sports at Garfield and Dakota Meadows schools, North Mankato, and was a volunteer tutor for the Somali Student Association after-school program.
Melanie Garcia tutored fifth-grade Somali children at Lincoln Community Center, performed in the Memorial Day parade and ceremonies, assisted the Madison Lake American Legion with funeral ceremonies, participated in an armed services Pen Pal program, served on a ship honor guard and burial at sea while deployed overseas, and stuffed Support Our Troops boxes for troops in Iraq.
Zhao Wen Jing taught Chinese locally and shared the Chinese culture and language by participating in many volunteer activities, including the Mankato Pow Wow, Asian Pacific American Conference, Native American Conference, Pan African Conference and International Women’s Day.
Phillip Ozmun volunteered with the Mankato Police Explorers and led the Law Enforcement Club in Adopt-A-Highway cleanup and fundraising.
Dorinda Sampson volunteered at the Blue Earth County Sexual Violence Resource Center for two years.
Rhea Wyss coordinated the first Pride parade in Mankato and was a 1½-year member of South Central Minnesota Pride Inc. Wyss executed all details of the parade, securing a start location and permit, planning the route and obtaining security and volunteers.
