Two Minnesota State Mankato students – Erin Rahman of Hopkins, Minn., and James Livermont of Rochester, Minn. – have been awarded Fulbright U.S. Student scholarships.
The 2007-2008 Fulbright awards were announced recently by the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
Rahman, a senior, will study political science in Bangladesh. She is majoring in Spanish and international relations.
Livermont, a graduate student, will teach English as a second language and study French linguistics in Belgium. He is focusing on teaching English as a second language.
The two are among more than 1,300 U.S. citizens who will travel abroad during the 2007-2008 academic year as part of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. They represent the second and third Fulbrights at Minnesota State Mankato this year. David Williams, vice president for University Advancement, will be part of the U.S.-Germany International Education Administrators Program in Berlin Oct. 28 to Nov. 10.
The program is America’s flagship international educational exchange program, and is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Since it was established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the Fulbright Program has provided approximately 279,500 people – including 105,400 Americans – with the opportunity to observe the political, economic, educational and cultural institutions of other countries, and to exchange ideas.
Fulbright recipients are selected based on academic or professional achievement and demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is administered by the Institute of International Education.
