A Minnesota State University, Mankato female student died Sunday, Nov. 18, after being struck by a vehicle in Mankato. Another female student who was with her was injured.
The Mankato Department of Public Safety reported that at 12:47 a.m. on Nov. 18, the department responded to a report of two pedestrians being struck by a car on Third Avenue near Kingswood Drive.
“Fire and medical crews found two young women lying in the roadway with serious injuries,” the police department press release stated. “Both were immediately transported to Immanuel Saint Joseph’s emergency room, where one of the women was pronounced dead from her massive injuries. The second woman was undergoing surgery and treatment for her injuries.”
Police said an initial investigation indicated that the women had been walking north along Third Avenue. “Apparently one of the two women was laying in the traffic lane and being helped by the other woman when they were both struck by a vehicle driven by a 17-year-old Mankato resident driving north on Third Avenue,” the release said.
“The Minnesota State Patrol was called to the scene to conduct a reconstruction and investigation into the crash,” the release added.
The names of the victims will be released by the State Patrol following notification of relatives, and the name of the vehicle’s driver is being withheld until completion of the investigation.
Minnesota State Mankato President Richard Davenport expressed condolences on behalf of the entire campus community. “Our deepest, heartfelt sympathies go out to loved ones, fellow students, friends and acquaintances,” Davenport said. “And we extend our wishes for a speedy, complete recovery to the injured student. The campus community is tremendously saddened by this tragic event.”
University grief counselors have provided and are continuing to provide help to friends of the two students, and are available to provide counseling for any students who seek help.
A memorial event is being planned by the University, and a “remembrances” Web page will be posted as a site where friends and loved ones can find more information and can express their condolences.
