The summit, from 8-11:30 a.m., is free and open to students, faculty, staff and all members of the public. Participants are invited to share their ideas and experiences in an effort to reduce high-risk drinking in the Mankato area. No reservations are necessary.

Susanne Williams, nationally recognized expert on high-risk drinking programs, will be the event’s keynote speaker, discussing how other universities are using local resources to attack the problem.

Former First District Congressman Tim Penny will moderate several panel discussions by public safety officials, medical professionals, secondary education leaders, counselors and high school and college students. The mayors of Mankato and North Mankato will welcome participants, and the event will include a greeting from Minnesota State Mankato President Richard Davenport.

Williams, assistant to the president of Minnesota State University Moorhead, leads a collaborative group that works to minimize the culture of drinking in the Moorhead area. The collaboration includes Minnesota State University Moorhead, Concordia University and the area community and technical college.

The summit is being organized by a broadly representative group of community volunteers with support from the Mankato Foundation, the City of Mankato, the Free Press and Minnesota State Mankato.
