Members of the Speech Team will compete in the nation's most prestigious collegiate speech tournament, the annual American Forensic Association National Individual Events Tournament, at the University of Texas-Austin Thursday through Tuesday, April 3-8.
The team will present a showcase performance of some of its AFA-NIET events on Saturday, April 1, at 6:30 p.m. in Ostrander Auditorium.
Last year Minnesota State Mankato hosted the AFA-NIET. To qualify for the tournament, students must place first, second or third in three different regional tournaments during the year. This year the team qualified 11 students in 27 events.
"This is the most events the team has qualified in the five years I have been at Minnesota State Mankato," said Leah White, director of forensics. "This is even more significant considering that more than 20 students participated in forensics this year, and all but three are in their first or second year of college competition."
Seven students will take part in 22 events, including:
Senior Stephon (Zeke) Sorenson (Cheyenne, Wyo.) in Prose Interpretation, Program Oral Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Poetry Interpretation and Communication Analysis. Zeke also qualified Dramatic Interpretation, but due to entry constraints will not compete in that event.
Sophomore Jason Reisch (Sioux Falls, S.D.) in Duo Interpretation, Program Oral Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation and After Dinner Speaking. Jason also qualified in Poetry Interpretation but due to entry constraints will not compete in that event.
Sophomore Megan Petersen (Owatonna, Minn.) in Duo Interpretation, Poetry Interpretation and After Dinner Speaking.
Sophomore Justin Hathaway (Sioux Falls, S.D.) in Prose Interpretation, After Dinner Speaking and Poetry Interpretation.
Freshman Sean Paskach (Cottonwood, Minn.) in Prose Interpretation, Program Oral Interpretation and Informative Speaking.
Freshman Sarah Walker (Iola, Wis.) in Impromptu Speaking, Persuasive Speaking and Communication Analysis.
Freshman Suzanne Lumberg (Woodbury, Minn.) in Informative Speaking, Duo and Poetry Interpretation.
Due to funding constraints, students must qualify three events to attend the tournament. Several other students also qualified for events but will not attend the tournament: Junior Grant Anderson (Madison Lake, Minn.) in Duo Interpretation; sophomore April Larson (North Mankato, Minn.) in Duo Interpretation; sophomore Alex Franzen (St. Peter, Minn.) in Duo Interpretation; and freshman Wade Werner (Sioux Falls, S.D.) in Dramatic Interpretation.
