Evolution of mascot, state's environmental history to be discussed at April 18 'Memory and Place' symposium

Minnesota’s environmental history and the evolution of the Minnesota State Mankato mascot will be among the topics presented by students at the university’s “Minnesota History Symposium: Memory and Place” Friday, April 18.

The symposium for undergraduate and graduate students, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Morris Hall 102, is sponsored by the Department of History and the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences. The event is free and open to students, faculty, staff and the public.

Undergraduate students will present from 1-2:45 p.m. on the theme “Coming to Terms with Minnesota’s Past. Presentations will include Jay Busby, “Reconciling the Past in Minnesota: The Duluth Clayton Jackson McGie Memorial and the Mankato Hanging Monuments”; and John Klima, John Krolak, Kelli Lageson, Angela Oberle, Jose Osorio, Melissa Seeley and Tiffany Warman, “Wanted: A Name for Mankato Teachers College Athletic Teams: The Evolution of the MSU Mascot.”

(Minnesota State Mankato was one of the first institutions in the nation to address sensitive mascot issues in the early 1970s.)

Graduate students will discuss environmental history from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Reed Petersen will present “Unnatural” Wilderness: The Boundary Waters”; John Crampton will present “Rise of Suburban Environmentalism and the Founding of the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge”; and Tracey Hammell will present “Amelia Bowing and the One Thousand Acre Forest.”
