Dennis Miller, former Midwest Wireless president and CEO who built the company into one of the nation’s largest independent regional carriers, received the 2008 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from Minnesota State University, Mankato on April 10.
Miller, a 1982 Business Administration graduate from Mankato, received the award at a dinner and ceremony hosted by the university’s Alumni Association.
The Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award goes to Minnesota State Mankato graduates who have achieved high rank or honor in their professions and had a widespread effect on their communities, and for accomplishments during their careers.
Miller is one of four Minnesota State Mankato graduates honored as 2008 Distinguished Alumni Award winners.
After graduating from Minnesota State Mankato in 1982, he sold two-way radios and pagers for Motorola. At age 23 he was promoted to a Motorola management position, and five years later was named corporate sales manager for Northwest Telephone, Wisconsin.
In 1989 the Northwest Telephone president selected Miller to help a group of independent telephone companies build the company that became Midwest Wireless. In 2005 Miller oversaw the sale of Midwest Wireless to Alltel for more than $1 billion.
In 2005 he received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award. He is a member of the Minnesota State Mankato Athletic Hall of Fame, Foundation Board of Directors and College of Business Advisory Council, and a former member of the South Central Technical College Foundation board and past board chair of Technology Plus and the Institute for Wireless Education. He has been active with the Mankato Area Hockey Association, the Immanuel St. Joseph’s-Mayo Health Systems board and others.
Minnesota State Mankato is part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, which comprises 32 state universities, community colleges, technical colleges and combined community and technical colleges located on 53 campuses across the state. The system serves approximately 242,000 students annually.
