Carl M. Egan, a retired Minnesota State University, Mankato construction management faculty member, received the 2008 Distinguished Alumni Fitterer Service Award from the University on April 10.
Egan, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., received the award at a dinner and ceremony hosted by the university’s Alumni Association. He is one of four Minnesota State Mankato graduates honored as 2008 Distinguished Alumni Award winners.
The Fitterer Service Award goes to Minnesota State Mankato graduates whose efforts have preserved, promoted and supported the University.
In 1967 Egan earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science & Sociology from Minnesota State Mankato, and 1969 earned a master’s degree in Urban & Regional Studies. As a student he formed SAFE (Students for Academic Freedom and Education), and he started the Vets Club in 1967.
He started teaching at his alma mater in 1964; worked in private-sector construction for several years; and then returned to the University in 1979.
He was instrumental in establishing the construction management program and structuring it to meet industry needs. Under his tenure as director it became one of the most respected programs of its kind in the nation.
He traveled to China and Russia to share his expertise in construction management, and in 2003 he received a Fulbright Scholarship to teach in Russia. In 2004 he was honored by the State of Minnesota with the proclamation of Carl Egan Day.
Minnesota State Mankato is part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, which comprises 32 universities and colleges on 53 campuses across the state.
