Deja vu will prevail when Old Main Village holds its 20th anniversary fete on Tuesday.

Former Minnesota State University President Margaret Preska will re-enact the ribbon-cutting ceremony she performed in 1988, when the former university administration and classroom building was re-christened as a retirement community.

Preska also will deliver the keynote address in front of the 70-unit apartment building that continues to cling to its university ties.

Several former MSU faculty members opted to live there in their retirements. One, in fact, resides in the very classroom she taught in.

Mary Dooley taught geography in Old Main from 1966 until it was abandoned in the mid-1970s. Her apartment contains the same window views she had as an instructor.

“I knew all along that when I left my house, I’d want to move to Old Main,” said Dooley, who has lived there a decade.
