Two recent graduates have been awarded Fulbright U.S. Student scholarships.
Mary Nelson, an international business and French major who completed her studies in July, was awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student scholarship to Taiwan as an English teaching assistant, according to the Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
Lucas Brun, who graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in German, was granted a Fulbright Student scholarship as a U.S. teaching assistant in Austria. His award is for one year, with possible renewal for a second.
The 2008-‘09 Fulbright awards were announced recently by the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
Nelson, who started her Fulbright teaching assignment early this month, is teaching and studying in Taiwan until June 30, 2009.
She studied abroad in Rouen, France, in spring 2007, and during her senior year worked in the Kearney International Center as College of Business student ambassador, helping to recruit and advise business students on study abroad opportunities. At Minnesota State Mankato she was active in Phi Delta Psi, Student Senate and French Club.
Brun will teach at two Austrian schools in Güssing, Burgenland, starting in October, continuing there through May 2009. At Minnesota State Mankato he was president and vice president of German Club and a member of the charter Phi Sigma Pi chapter, national honor fraternity. He also assisted with an English as a Second Language writing course.
Nelson and Brun are among more than 1,450 U.S. citizens who will travel abroad for the 2008-‘09 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.
Fulbright recipients are selected based on academic or professional achievement and demonstrated leadership potential in their fields.
The program is America’s flagship international educational exchange program, and is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Since it was established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the Fulbright Program has provided approximately 286,500 people with the opportunity to observe other countries and exchange ideas.
