Aaron Doering, an adventure educator and an endowed chair at the University of Minnesota, will discuss the impact of climate change on the Arctic as speaker for the Truman and Reta Wood Community Leadership Scholarship Dinner Saturday, Sept. 27.
The 14th annual dinner will honor Minnesota State University, Mankato’s 2008 Wood Scholarship winners, Jon Bloemendal and Student Senate President Ryan Anderson. It also will recognize Community Service Award winner Claire Faust.
The reception and dinner, at 6 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church, 501 S. Second St., Mankato, is open to the public. Participants are urged to register for the event no later than Thursday, Sept. 18, online at www.mnsu.edu/alumni/wood.
The Wood scholarship dinner is an annual fundraising event for the Truman and Reta Wood Community Leadership Scholarship at Minnesota State Mankato.

Doering advocates “adventure learning” for K-12 students to enhance their scientific, environmental and geological knowledge. During his Arctic adventure he delivered education programs to more than one million students worldwide via the Internet.
As the Bonnie Westby Huebner Endowed Chair in Education and Technology at the U of M, Doering teaches courses on how technology can be used to enhance learning. He holds a PhD. in instructional systems and technology and an MS in geography (Minnesota State Mankato, 1995).
Wood Scholarships, the largest scholarships granted by Minnesota State Mankato’s College of Social & Behavioral Sciences, go to students who show exceptional community leadership and service, who have a high academic record, whose first major is political science, and who completed 90 semester hours by spring 2008. The first Wood Scholarship was awarded in 1992.

Political science/law enforcement Professor Emeritus Truman Wood touched many lives and encouraged students to get involved in their communities. Reta Wood did the same as an elementary school teacher for 25 years.
