A tribute to Music Professor Emeritus Harry Dunscombe will be presented by the Minnesota State Mankato Department of Music on Sunday, Oct. 19.
Friends, colleagues and students will celebrate his life through music and spoken word at 3 p.m. in Halling Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center. The concert will include a wide array of music, including two of Dunscombe’s solo recordings performed on the violoncello. Proceeds from the event will be donated in his honor to the department’s Music Student Scholarship Fund.
Professor Emeritus Dunscombe died Jan. 21, 2008. He retired as a Minnesota State Mankato faculty member in spring 2007.
A cellist and conductor, Dunscombe brought to Minnesota State Mankato an exceptionally wide-ranging experience as a performer in solo, chamber music and orchestral repertoires, as a symphony and opera conductor, and as a teacher. For more than 20 years he directed the Upper Midwest String Conference in collaboration with the American String Teachers Association.
“The music world lost a great musician in the passing of Harry Dunscombe,” said Music faculty colleague David Viscoli. “I learned so much from him musically and artistically, and feel grateful to have been able to collaborate with him on the major works in the repertoire. He was generous with his time to both students and colleagues, and he was the consummate professional.”
“Harry was a wonderful friend, and we miss him,” added James and Ann McGuire of Mankato. “He was a superb, sensitive, and fascinating performer. He was so good to our sons, Peter and Colin. As a mentor, he created opportunities for many young musicians of Mankato and southern Minnesota through the Upper Midwest String Conference at Minnesota State University.”
