Clyde Bellecourt will be keynote speaker at Minnesota State University, Mankato’s 38th annual Office of Institutional Diversity dinner Friday, Nov. 21.

The dinner, starting at 6 p.m. in the Centennial Student Union Ballroom, features ethnic foods and entertainment with a multicultural, American Indian theme. The event will cap a week of diversity and international education activities.

The dinner is an opportunity for the Minnesota State Mankato Institutional Diversity staff and students to acknowledge leaders and supporters of cultural diversity, and to recognize accomplishments, scholarship and leadership by students of color. The event also raises money for Institutional Diversity emergency loan and program activity funds.

Bellecourt’s talk will honor his brother, the late Vernon Bellecourt, one of America’s heroes in the fight for human and civil rights for American Indian people. Vernon Bellecourt, a longtime American Indian Movement leader, died last year from complications of pneumonia.

Clyde Bellecourt is a Native American born on the White Earth Indian Reservation in northern Minnesota. He helped found the American Indian Movement with his brother, Dennis Banks, Herb Powless and Eddie Benton Banai.

At the Nov. 21 event the Clarence E. Harris Humanitarian Award will be presented to an individual, group, agency or organization that has demonstrated continuous support or service to promote cultural diversity within the university and the surrounding community.

Tickets are $10 for students or senior citizens and $30 for non-students, and should be reserved by Friday, Nov. 14. Those interested in ticket information may call the Division of Institutional Diversity at (507) 389-6125.
