Thumbs up to the Minnesota State University student groups who organized an event to get donations for care packages to send to U.S. troops in Iraq.

The MSU student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and the ROTC at MSU as well as the Veterans Center helped participate in an event that helped tell the story of Iraq War deployments through the eyes of soldiers and doctors who had been there.

Some 400 people showed up to the event and learned that soldiers coming back from Iraq just need to be listened to and understood. They don’t need political discussions or to be asked “What was it like over there?” They will tell their stories in their own time and words.

Dr. Michael Rath, a Mankato Clinic physician who has been deployed to Iraq, also provided information on how soldiers might be dealing with post traumatic stress and other reactions from non-traditional warfare.

People can still donate items or cash for the care packages in a drop-off box on the first floor of the Centennial Student Union between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. Recommended items include instant coffee, gum, candy that won’t melt, beef jerky (not pork), pens, stationery, Powerade, Kleenex, batteries, Nerf balls, soccer balls, baseballs, CDs or DVDs, mints, throat drops and lip balm.
