Minnesota's huge budget deficit could take a toll on higher education.

Colleges like MSU are preparing to take the hit. Minnesota State University is developing a plan that would reduce the 2009-2010 school year budget by six percent.

University officials say it's too early to say exactly where they'll make cuts.

But, they do say they will begin restricting travel, cutting expenses for supplies, and will only fill essential positions.

Officials say they're hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.

We are going to have to look closely at how we can be even more efficient and how we can help the state of Minnesota solve this really once-in-a-generation kind of budget deficit, and downturn in the economy," says Rick Straka, vice president for Finance and Administration.

The state of Minnesota is facing a $4.58 billion deficit.

Straka says they won't know how that will affect higher education until the spring, when the new session begins.
