The inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th U.S. president will be observed and celebrated in Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Centennial Student Union Tuesday, Jan. 20, with big-screen TV coverage, panel discussions and live reports.

Television news coverage of inaugural events will be displayed all day on three big-screen TVs in Centennial Student Union Ballroom. Students, faculty, staff and visitors also will be able to take part in panel discussions led by university experts, and will be able to hear live reports from University staff members who plan to attend the inauguration.

The inaugural event will include presidential trivia contests with prizes, snacks and food available for purchase, commemorative buttons and comments and analysis from Political Science faculty members.

Trivia contests and live inaugural reports from Centennial Student Union building coordinator Nadeem Mohammed and assistant director of Greek life John Bulcock begin at 10 a.m. in the Ballroom. The telecast of the oath of office and Obama’s inaugural address starts at 11 a.m., followed by coverage of the parade and other festivities.

Television coverage also is scheduled in Ostrander Auditorium from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by a panel discussion hosted by the Black Student Union and sponsored by the College Access Program. The panel discussion, “Celebration of the First African-American President,” will be from 2-4 p.m.

Ballroom coverage and events will be hosted by Joe Kunkel, Minnesota State Mankato political science faculty member and a national expert on state and federal elections. IMPACT is providing promotional support and event coordination.

All campus inaugural events are free and open to students, faculty, staff and the public.

Some Minnesota State Mankato professors plan to release their classes so they can watch the inauguration, and large audiences are expected in both the Ballroom and Ostrander Auditorium, as well as at other television locations on campus.
