Space is available in a two-day free dental clinic for children 3 to 17 to be held Feb. 5 and 6 at Minnesota State University.
Hygienists and dentists are volunteering to provide teeth cleanings, X-rays, exams, fluoride treatments and sealants to children.
Adults can have free exams and x-rays.
The effort aims to provide preventative dental care for kids who aren’t insured or who otherwise don’t get regular check-ups, said Brigette Cooper, an assistant professor in MSU’s department of dental hygiene.
If the exam turns up decay, the clinic can schedule a filling at the reduced cost of $35 to $50, she said.
This is the sixth year for “Give Kids a Smile,” the nationwide effort that takes place Feb. 6.
Mankato’s clinic typically serves about 100 children, Cooper said, as a dozen chairs are used at once.
The university’s dental hygiene department, comprised of 48 students and faculty, sees regular patients year-round, and is always looking for more, Cooper said.
She said the clinic is one way to help solve the wider access-to- care problem faced by the health care industry.
