Good Thunder to feature creative writing faculty April 16

Richard TerrillMinnesota State Mankato’s Good Thunder Reading Series will feature the works of three creative writing faculty members Thursday, April 16.

Writer Diana Joseph and writer and poet Richard Terrill will be interviewed on KMSU-FM Thursday morning and will lead a discussion on writing at 3 p.m. that day in Ostrander Auditorium, Centennial Student Union. At 7:30 p.m. the two will read from their published work in CSU 253, and will celebrate the work of a third fiction writer, Terry Davis, who will retire in May. (Davis will not be at the event.)

Diana JosephThe readings and discussion, which will complete Good Thunder’s spring-semester programming, are free and open to students, faculty, staff and the public.

Joseph’s memoir, “I’m Sorry You Feel That Way,” was released last month by Putnam, and her collection of short stories, “Happy or Otherwise,” was published in 2003 by Carnegie Mellon Press. She has taught at Minnesota State Mankato since 2005.

Terrill is author of “Coming Late to Rachmaninoff,” winner of the Minnesota Book Award for poetry; “Saturday Night in Baoding: A China Memoir,” winner of the Associated Writing Programs Award for nonfiction; and “Fakebook: Improvisations on a Journey Back to Jazz.” He has received three Fulbright awards, and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, Wisconsin Arts Board, Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and Jerome Foundation. He has taught at the university since 1991.

Terry DavisAn interview with Joseph and Terrill, part of the “Authors in Transit” series on KMSU 89.7 FM, will air Thursday, April 16, at 1 p.m., and on Friday, April 17, at 11 a.m.

This year’s Good Thunder Reading Series is funded by the Department of English, the College of Arts & Humanities, the Office of Institutional Diversity, the Nadine B. Andreas Endowment, the Eddice B. Barber Visiting Writer Endowment, the Robert C. Wright Endowment, and individual donors. It is made possible by a Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council grant, from funds appropriated by the Minnesota Legislature and the McKnight Foundation. It also is made possible by a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, through a legislative appropriation and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Library Services and the Barnes & Noble Bookstore offer additional assistance.
