Daren Cotter, founder and owner of CotterWeb, will receive the 2009 Distinguished Young Alumni Award Friday, April 24.

Cotter, of Saint Paul, is one of 12 alumni who have been named 2009 award winners. He will be honored at an April 24 dinner and ceremony hosted by the Minnesota State Mankato Alumni Association.

The Distinguished Young Alumni Award goes to graduates 35 years old or younger who have reached professional achievements early in their careers, and have positively impacted their communities.

Cotter started his first business in high school, creating computer software and selling it on the Internet. At Minnesota State Mankato he explored online business models, and at the end of his freshman year launched CotterWeb, an Internet marketing company that provides online rewards for consumers and an advertising medium for businesses.

When Cotter graduated in 2004 with a degree in computer information science, CotterWeb generated more than $2 million in revenue, and in 2008 the company earned more than $17 million in revenue. The company has 30 employees and is self-funded.

CotterWeb has received several awards for growth, including Inc.’s fastest-growing private companies in America. CotterWeb also has partnered with the non-profit Lifeworks, an organization that employs individuals with disabilities. In 2008 Cotter was a finalist for Ernst and Young’s Upper Midwest Entrepreneur of the Year award.
