Gov. Tim Pawlenty has signed a bill to reorganize the Minnesota River Joint Powers Board.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Terry Morrow, DFL-St. Peter, and Sen. Dennis Frederickson, R-New Ulm, renames the board as the Minnesota River Board and makes a number of changes to its purpose, duties and membership structure.

The joint powers board was established in 1995 to improve and protect water quality in the Minnesota River Basin. The board has representatives from the 12 major watersheds in the area.

Proposed reorganization plans include collaboration with the Water Resources Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato, and the creation of an advisory committee.

The board will be required to submit reports on the progress of water cleanup efforts within the basin.
