Assistant registrar Debra Schulz is the first Minnesota State University, Mankato employee to be accepted into the prestigious Higher Education Resource Services women’s leadership institute at the University of Denver.

The Denver institute’s three seminars prepare 40 women faculty members and administrators for higher education leadership. Nationally recognized women leaders and higher education scholars teach and mentor the participants, helping them improve their institutional knowledge, skills and perspectives.

Schulz will participate in the Denver sessions Aug. 2-7, Sept. 10-12 and Oct. 22-24.

“High-quality mentoring experiences such as those provided by the HERS institute and others are extremely important to Minnesota State Mankato and all of higher education,” said Minnesota Stated Mankato President Richard Davenport. “Women traditionally have been under-represented in the executive levels of higher education, and these programs help to change that. I’m proud that Deb Schulz is our representative to this institute.”

The institute’s theme is “Women’s Leadership in Time of Crisis: Leveraging Responses for Institutional Renewal.” Seminars aim to help participants understand the economic environment and how they can develop post-recovery strategies, invest in resources for renewal, and empower and sustain leadership.

“Minnesota State Mankato is a great place to work and learn,” Schulz said. “I feel very fortunate to attend the 2009 HERS Denver Institute, and I plan to use this opportunity to learn as much as I can to help make ours an even better university.”

Schulz has been a Minnesota State Mankato staff member since 1993, serving as administrative assistant to the registrar, interim academic athletic eligibility coordinator and assistant registrar.
She earned a master’s degree in educational leadership and a bachelor’s in administrative management from Minnesota State Mankato, and in December 2010 she will complete a specialist certificate in educational leadership. She has attended the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Louma Leadership Academy, the Minnesota State Mankato Leadership Academy, and the Leadership Institute of Greater Mankato.

She also has served on numerous Minnesota State Mankato committees, including the President’s Commission on the Status of Women, the Student Conduct Board and several search committees.

The three nationally acclaimed HERS institutes – at Bryn Mawr College, Wellesley College and the University of Denver – offer intensive residential professional development experiences to women in mid- and senior-level positions in higher education.

Several Minnesota State Mankato employees have attended the Bryn Mawr institute, but Schulz is the first in the Denver program.

Minnesota State Mankato, a comprehensive, doctoral university with 14,700 students and two satellite sites, is part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, which comprises 32 state universities, community colleges, technical colleges and combined community and technical colleges across the state.
