Minnesota State University, Mankato’s independent public radio station KMSU-FM has been named “Station of the Year” by the Association of Minnesota Public Educational Radio Stations.
The coveted award was presented to KMSU station manager James Gullickson at the association’s annual meeting in Grand Marais, Minn., in June.
KMSU earned the award for its 2008 infrastructure improvements, for adding a remote portable studio in Centennial Student Union, and for winning the 2009 Pathfinder Award.
“Our loyal listener support, benevolent collaborators, underwriters and volunteers have made the past year so rewarding,” Gullickson said. “The future is very bright for KMSU, and I am excited about the near future as we embark on some very compelling programming initiatives.”
Last year KMSU completed a major infrastructure project – a new tower and transmitter building and a newer transmitter, producing a more reliable signal throughout south central Minnesota. Several months ago the station opened a portable remote site in Centennial Student Union, and every weekday student hosts broadcast “Radio a la Carte.”
Gullickson was re-elected president of AMPERS at the organization’s June meeting. He has been instrumental in securing Legacy Amendment funding for the independent radio association. The new state sales tax fund, earmarked for arts and cultural heritage programming, promises to create a higher profile for the 12 AMPERS stations.
Minnesota State Mankato, a comprehensive, doctoral university with 14,700 students and two satellite sites, is part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, which comprises 32 state universities, community colleges, technical colleges and combined community and technical colleges across the state.
