The auditorium will boast new seats, a new stage, improved sound and lighting systems and better wheelchair access when the $1.7 million project is complete.

Ronald Reagan spoke there. So did Gerald Ford. It plays host to the annual production of “The Vagina Monologues.” Every new freshman or visiting prospective student makes a trip through there at least once.

It’s Ostrander Auditorium, on the main floor of Minnesota State Mankato's Centennial Student Union (CSU). And with the exception of its sports facilities, Ostrander may be among the institution’s most public places.

Now this most notable of Minnesota State Mankato locales is finally getting the $1.7 million facelift it has deserved for years — a facelift that will include new seats, a new stage, modern sound and lighting equipment and a much better situation for visitors using wheel chairs.

If you go there now, all you’ll see are yellow hard hats, scaffolding and all the usual signs of “ work in progress.”

When it’s done, CSU officials say, the glory of the room named after one of the university’s greatest donors will be restored.
