Police officers train for it extensively, but they hope they’ll never have to use it.

And if they do, it becomes one of the defining moments of their careers.

Deadly force. Every police officer, sheriff’s deputy, state trooper, conservation officer or armed security guard goes to work every day knowing fate could, at anytime, throw them into a situation where they need to fire their weapon at someone.

William Lewinski, an instructor at Minnesota State University and director of the Force Science Institute, has made a career out of studying police officers in deadly force situations. He conducts training for police departments and occasionally serves as an expert witness in court trials or grand jury inquests.

What goes through an officer’s mind?

A lot, Lewinski says.
