A course for older adults, “Leadership Development for the Rest of Your Life,” will be presented by the Vital Aging Network starting Friday, Oct. 9.
The course is intended to give participants age 50 and older a chance to network, tap into leadership skills and plan and implement a project providing leadership for the common good. The course will meet the on second Friday of every month, through May 2010.
Minnesota State Mankato professor emeritus Joe Hogan will facilitate. Hogan taught for nearly 30 years in the university’s counseling and student personnel department.
Hogan and gerontology graduate student Linda Davison will help class members integrate information from handbooks and guest lecturers. Interactive TV will connect participants to guest lecturers in the Twin Cities.
Lecturers will include Jan Hively, co-founder of the Vital Aging Network and 2008 Minnesota Gerontologist of the Year, and former Chaska mayor Bob Roepke.
This is the first year that the Minnesota State Mankato Center on Aging will host the course. Other course sponsors include the Minnesota River Area Agency on Aging, the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation and the Mankato Area Lifelong Learners.
The course is open to the public for $750. Half-tuition scholarships are available through the Vital Aging Network, and registration can be done through Minnesota State Mankato Extended Learning at (507) 389-2572.
The Vital Aging Network is a St. Paul-based volunteer organization that enhances the leadership capacities of older adults to create vital communities.
