The eclectic group Greg Herriges and Telluric Currents will perform original and traditional world music Sunday, Oct. 25, as part of the Nadine B. Andreas Artists in Residence program.

The performance, sponsored by the Department of Music, will be at 7:30 p.m. in Halling Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center. General admission is $15; tickets for students with a valid MavCard are $10.

Herriges is a “guitar renegade” and “a native maestro,” according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “His technique on both guitar and bouzouki is formidable, his feel for diverse cultures exemplary,” the newspaper adds.

A virtuoso performer and award-winning composer, he honed his mesmerizing style by studying Asian and other international music, and his music is internationally acclaimed.

Greg Herriges and Telluric Currents combines the traditions of East and West, putting new spins on music from Indian ragas and Turkish folk to Japanese koto tunes and surf-jazz. The group features Hindustani vocalist Pooja Goswami, tabla (Indian drum set) master A. Pavan, and ethnopercussionist Troy Berg.

Herriges, a 2009 Bush Artist Fellow, has a background in progressive rock and classical guitar, but studied ethnomusicology, focusing on Indian, Indonesian, and East Asian classical traditions. He has worked with some of the Midwest’s greatest exponents of Chinese, Javanese and Hindustani music, composes and performs music for theater, and writes instructional music books for Hal Leonard Publishing.
