Human migration expert Holly Barcus will discuss “Modern Nomads: Transnational Migration and the Kazakh Diaspora of Western Mongolia” Friday, Nov. 20.
Barcus’ talk, Part of International Education/Diversity Week, will be at 3 p.m. in Armstrong Hall Room 4. It is free and open to students, faculty, staff and the public.
Since the 1880s Mongolia has been home to a small, geographically concentrated Kazakh population. When the Soviet Union dissolved in the early 1990s, almost 60,000 Mongolian-Kazakhs migrated from Mongolia to Kazakhstan. Within five years nearly one-third of the migrants returned to Mongolia despite depressed economic conditions.
Barcus’ talk will focus on reasons for their departure and return, as well as the characteristics of the Kazakh minority group in Mongolia.
Barcus is a Macalester College geography faculty member.
The lecture is co-sponsored by Minnesota State Mankato’s Department of Geography, Kearney International Center and Division of Institutional Diversity.
