Minnesota State Mankato is one of 14 area colleges that will use grant money to help turn out better teachers.

$40 million from the Bush Foundation will go towards a 10-year effort to improve teacher preparation at colleges in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.

As part of the program they developed for the grant money, the College of Education will recruit teaching candidates, and partner with area schools to provide classroom experience, as well as job placement for graduates.

It's an approach they say is getting a lot of attention.

"There are a lot of people in Washington looking at what's going on here, and there are a lot of people really focusing on 'what are we going to do, and how are we going to do it?" says Dr. Michael Miller, dean of the College of Education. "So it's very exciting for the whole region."

The program aims to produce at least 25,000 new teachers among the 14 colleges involved over the next decade.
