The Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation has awarded $20,000 to Minnesota State University, Mankato for the College of Science, Engineering & Technology’s new Center for Renewable Energy Research & Technology.

The foundation’s grant will support purchase of research lab equipment to evaluate renewable fuels production, storage, transfer, use and emissions.

“We are pleased to support these innovative efforts to advance technical skills among our region’s young workers and further renewable energy strategies in southern Minnesota.” said Tim Penny, foundation president and CEO. “It is exactly this type of innovation and partnership that help people contribute and leverage their assets to the fullest extent.”

SMIF attempts to “encourage collaboration and partnering that gives this region an extra edge,” Penny added at a Dec. 8 ceremony at the university.

“The renewable energy center is an outstanding example of collaboration,” said Minnesota State Mankato President Richard Davenport, adding that federal, state, non-profit and for-profit entities all are contributing to the facility.

The $1.8-million, 6,300-square-foot center will be constructed on the northwest corner of Minnesota State Mankato’s campus. Ground for the facility was broken last month, and construction will begin in spring 2010.

Within the center, 4,800 square feet will be allocated to an engine fuels emissions laboratory, and 1,500 square feet will be allocated for International Renewable Energy Technology Institute testing of heating units.

The emissions laboratory will be the only research facility in the Upper Midwest capable of conducting biodiesel, ethanol, hybrid and other bio-fuel engines tests according to Environmental Protection Agency guidelines.

The Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation is a catalyst for economic growth in 20 Minnesota counties, working to build a prosperous region with vibrant communities, innovative businesses and a skilled and valued workforce.
