NSF grants to fund electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer

Two grants will fund sophisticated new science instruments.

Minnesota State Mankato will be adding new research technology thanks to two awards from the national science foundation.

A nearly two hundred thousand dollar grant to the Biological Sciences Department will be used for a scanning electron microscope.The instrument lets researchers examine a specimen and analyze its' elements and structure.

Also the school's science professors will use a 226 thousand dollar NSF award to buy a new X-ray diffractometer. Diffraction is used in a variety of fields to determine the structure of crystals, metals and powders.

The NSF funds nearly 20 percent of all federally supported research by America's Colleges and Universities.
