It was an odd sight. But not an unwelcome one.
More than a dozen Siberian huskies came to Minnesota State University Tuesday to help ease the burden of winter and infuse the start of spring semester with a little cold-weather fun.
It’s Winter Welcome Week at MSU, and dog-sled rides were just one of the many activities planned.
A trailer hauling a pack of huskies rolled in on the south side of the Julia A. Sears Residence Hall. Soon a line formed and students were getting a run through the back forty, courtesy of a half dozen dogs.
Andrew Newman took one of those rides. He wasn’t sure it’d meet his high standards for outdoor fun. The law enforcement major from Waconia said he’s into hunting, fishing and similar pursuits, but had never ridden a dog sled until today.
He came for obvious reasons.
“I saw they were having free dog sledding,” he said while giving a what-the-heck shrug. “You don’t really get a lot of opportunities to do this, so I figured I’d try it.”
He said he loved it and called it a great way to get students engaged in campus activities.
The idea came from Kelsey Andreen, who experienced it as an undergraduate at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She’s now a graduate student at MSU and helping out with Winter Welcome Week, and thought if it worked well in Eau Claire, well ...
