Minnesota State University, Mankato will celebrate Black History Month with events and activities throughout February for students, faculty and the public focused on the theme “Believe-Achieve-Succeed.”

The celebration will open Monday, Feb. 1, with an address by Bukata Hayes, executive director of the Greater Mankato Diversity Council. Hayes will discuss “Race: The Power of an Illusion” at 3 p.m. in Ostrander Auditorium of Centennial Student Union. A reception will follow with refreshments at 5 p.m. in the International Student Center (CSU 269), hosted by Infiniti Student Organization.

Black History Month will end with the 34th annual, four-day Pan African Student Leadership Conference Feb. 24-27.

The public is invited to tune in to KMSU 89.7 FM throughout February to hear Minnesota State Mankato staff, faculty and administrators discuss Black History Month “Jewels,” a program about African-American people and events.

Other Black History Month events include:

  • Monday, Feb. 8: Family (Organization) Feud, 7 p.m., CSU 284, hosted by the Office of Multicultural Affairs
  • Tuesday, Feb. 9: Student panel and discussion, “Real Talk: The Future is in Our Hands,” 1 p.m., CSU 201, facilitated by Connie Johnson
  • Tuesday, Feb. 9: Faculty/ Staff Extravaganza (talent show), 7 p.m., Ostrander Auditorium, Master of ceremonies to be be Avra Johnson and James Gullickson
  • Thursday, Feb. 11: Student panel and discussion, “Real Talk: We are all in This Together,” 10 a.m., CSU 201, hosted by the African Student Association
  • Tuesday, Feb. 16: Student panel and discussion, “Real Talk: Navigating through the Maze,” 1 p.m., CSU 201, hosted by Reggie Edwards
  • Thursday, Feb. 18: Student panel and discussion, “Real Talk: Student Leadership and its Challenges,” 10 a.m., CSU 291, hosted by the Black Student Union
