Students encouraged to participate in 2010 Census, support future of Minnesota

Students can help secure Minnesota's political and economic future by participating in the 2010 Census.

College students - particularly commuter students - can help secure Minnesota's political and economic future by participating in the 2010 Census.

In mid-March, college students living off campus will receive a Census 2010 questionnaire at their residence. By completing and returning the form, they will help determine whether Minnesota receives its share of more than $400 billion in federal funding for colleges, universities and more. Student participation in the census will also help Minnesota keep its eight congressional seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

"Many college students don't know how census data impact the funding available to our schools and communities or where we should be counted," says Ashley Edwards, a University of Minnesota Humphrey graduate student working on the 2010 Census campaign. "Although college students are often informed about current events and issues, we must make sure we are not overlooking this opportunity to be counted."

Students should be aware that census data:

• help employers understand where the next generation of workers is coming from, which influences hiring efforts.
• are used by students and faculty members for reports, statistical profiles and research projects.
• determine college and university tuition grant and loan programs.
• help establish fair-market rents and enforce fair-lending practices.
• help planners develop recreational programs such as playgrounds, parks and trails and youth, adult and senior programs.
• are used for public transportation planning, such as selecting bus routes and rail stops.

College students across Minnesota are heavily involved in organizing and sponsoring campus census awareness events and programs. Students can get involved in a census promotion event on campus by contacting their student affairs office or student government group.
