Tim Huebsch of Maple Grove was recently named to the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal's 40 Under Forty list.

The list honors business professionals from the Twin Cities metropolitan area who are active in the community, successful businesspeople and are under 40 years of age.

Huebsch was one of almost 300 nominees. Of the 40 people on the list, only three, including Huebsch, are 30 years of age and younger. Well-known Minnesotans like Dave St. Peter, the Minnesota Twins president, and Gov. Tim Pawlenty have been recognized on the 40 Under Forty list in the past.

"I've had a passion for technology since middle school age," Huebsch said.

He has also worked with computers for much of his life. In his high school years, Huebsch worked with a tech coordinator and made immense technological advances like instituting new library and lunch systems in the schools in his district. He is currently General Mills' IS Department Manager. The company's sites receive more than 100 million visitors yearly. Huebsch's career at General Mills started with his second internship at the company, and he has worked there for more than seven years. He can envision himself at General Mills for years to come.

He is also the president of the Alumni Association of his alma mater, the Minnesota State University of Mankato. Due to his interest in being engaged in the community, Huebsch would like to someday be on the Maple Grove Planning Commission. There he would enjoy giving back to the community by making decisions that would have a lasting impact.

Huebsch attributes his success to his participation in the community, inquisitiveness and experiencing new things.

Every year he seeks out a new experience unrelated to his career. For example, one day at Nellie Stone Johnson Elementary School he worked as the principal.

He advises that others accept the challenge of trying something new each year as well. He added, "You learn so much and you can give back in so many different ways."

He works to assist young people in the professional world to become active in organizations. He said, "No matter what your interest or your passion is, there's a way to get involved in the community."

When young people come to him saying they are unsure of how to get involved, he directs them to his website, www.timhuebsch.com, where he has listed organizations he thinks provide outlets for participation in the community. These organizations include leadership development programs and arts organizations among others.

Since students and recent graduates are currently having difficulty finding jobs, they may be able to benefit from knowledge of Huebsch's experiences. His advice to young people looking for jobs is, "Be involved in the community because that involvement allows you to build skills, it shows your commitment to more than yourself."

He said that employers look for candidates who actively volunteer and practice leadership "because those are all key pieces to the whole person."

Another piece of advice he had for young people was to listen to what others have to say. He said each person has a story that provides a picture of who they are and how they view their community.
