Some Minnesota State Mankato students are headed to the State Fair to show off a special project . . . and represent all colleges in the state.

A small group of engineering students were picked to construct a special project. It's 20 feet- ong and 4 feet wide, and it's headed to St. Paul next week

"We started out with a design," says Derek Kvenvold, mechanical and civil engineering student. "All we had was a computer and very little extra information. It doesn't come with a construction manual."

There was no manual to construct this steel bridge -- only four students and a plan. But they welded and polished for weeks.

And the outcome? "It went great," says Mike Burdorf, mechanical and civil engineering student. "A great learning experience for everyone here."

The steel bridge will be a central focus of the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities' State Fair display this year. It symbolizes the fair's focus on STEM -- science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

"The reason we built this was to get people interested in engineering," Burdorf says. "Everything you look at is engineered. It can be electrical; it can be civil, automotive. Everything you use in everyday life has been engineered."

"I'm honored and proud that I got the opportunity to do this," Kvenvold says. "We're representing an awful lot of people."

They are representing a lot of people -- engineering students for all 32 colleges and universities in the state. They'll be at the fair the entire time, hoping to teach and get more people interested in the state's engineering programs.

The State Fair begins Aug. 26.
