With help from a federal grant, extra police patrols will be providing an expensive lesson to those who flaunt underage drinking laws during the next few days.
There will be six to eight extra Mankato officers and Blue Earth County sheriff’s deputies working overtime tonight, Friday and Saturday. All of the patrols will take place off campus, in neighborhoods and apartment complexes where students tend to live.
The patrols in neighborhoods around Minnesota State Mankato are nothing new to students who have experienced move-in weekend before. But there are always enough new students, usually freshmen getting their first taste of living outside their parents’ control, to keep officers busy writing underage drinking tickets, said Matt DuRose, detective commander for the Mankato Department of Public Safety.
Based on past experience, he’s expecting more than 100 tickets will be written. There will likely be a few who get more than one ticket, which carry a fine of $177 each.
The overtime will be paid from a $13,000 federal grant provided by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. DuRose said the grant will pay for the move-in patrols and another seven or eight nights of patrols during the rest of the school year.
