Freshmen at Minnesota State Mankato begin moving in to the dorms today... marking a milestone for the university -- the biggest influx of students on-campus, ever.
A record 3,200 students will live in on-campus housing this year at Minnesota State University, Mankato. That number is boosted by the new, 608-bed Julia Sears Hall that opened two years ago.
University officials say living on campus is actually preferred.
"What we know from our research is that first- and second-year students benefit from living on campus in terms of having both a higher grade point average and higher retention rates," says Director of Residential Life Cindy Janney.
Students may see other perks at the moment, however.
"(I) chose on-campus housing because first year (here) will be better than off-campus, because you don't have to buy groceries and get a meal plan," says Tyler Jellum.
Minnesota State Mankato is set to have their largest on-campus student population ever. That's due in part to an increased freshman class, and upperclassmen sticking around.
"We have a 1,000 beds that are now renovated with temperature control, and we have a new 600-bed semi-suite residence hall, so we have more and more amenities to offer returning students," Janney says.
At Minnesota State Mankato, 85 percent of new students choose to live on campus. Students --athletes and others who moved in earlier this week -- helped incoming freshmen today. This year's on-campus population is an increase of 7.5 percent over last year's.
