The Department of Theatre & Dance opened its Mainstage season with the most-requested musical on recent departmental audience surveys: “Chicago.” Presented Sept. 30 through Oct. 3 and 7 through 10 in the Ted Paul Theatre, it is sponsored by HickoryTech Corporation.

In roaring ’20s Chicago, chorus girl Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband Amos to take the rap ... until he finds out he's been duped and turns on Roxie. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another “Merry Murderess,” Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the “American Dream”: fame, fortune and acquittal. Music is by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, with a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse. The story sparked the 2002 Academy Award-winning blockbuster film.

“Chicago” is directed and choreographed by faculty member Paul Finocchiaro (“High School Musical,” “42nd Street,” “Mame”). It features senior BFA Musical Theatre candidate Megan Volkman-Wilson (Vera Charles in “Mame” and Lola in “Damn Yankees”) as Velma Kelly; junior BFA Musical Theatre candidate Laura Otremba (Sharpay in “High School Musical”) as Roxie Hart; and senior BFA Musical Theatre candidate Aaron Alan (Rapunzel’s Prince in “Into the Woods” and Coach Bolton in “High School Musical”) as attorney Billy Flynn.

Individual tickets for “Chicago” are $20 regular; $18 for senior citizens, youth 16 and under and groups of 15 or more; and $14 for current Minnesota State students. In addition, season subscriptions are available throughout the run of “Chicago.” For more information or to buy tickets online, visit the Theatre page.
