Monte Meyer had a wake-up call 18 months ago. He went to the doctor and stepped on the scale.
"I weighed 588 pounds. I cried," said Meyer.
The Lutheran pastor at Minnesota State University, Mankato was in a fight with food, and losing. That, he said, wasn't the worst part.
"As a pastor, this became idolatry, like a false idol. It's like I'm telling people to turn to Jesus for strength, hope and forgiveness, and I'm running for comfort to Burger King," he said.
Embarrassed about more than just his weight, Monte decided to do something about it. He teamed up with a nutritionist and started working out. He counted calories, wrote down everything he ate, and worked out five to six days a week.
"I've lost 242 pounds," he said with a grin.
The pastor likes to point out that he's a work in progress. He'd still like to lose 96 more pounds. Something he now knows he can do. But, he knows all too well how hard it is to get started.
"You wake up every day saying this is the day that I'm going to change and by 8:30 a.m. you're already at the McDonald's drive thru," said Meyer.
He wants others to know it is possible and that his life really is different, better.
"I'm a much better father, worker, pastor, anything else because I weigh 242 pounds less. I can get around, I'm happier, I have a better attitude, what's not to like about that."
