Guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque and the Flat Earth Ensemble will perform their unique blend of jazz and Indian classical music on Thursday, March 24, at Minnesota State Mankato.
The Performance Series concert will be at 7:30 p.m. in Halling Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center.
Haque’s career spans the spectrum of musical styles, and he moves easily between jazz and classical guitar. He has performed with Sting, Dizzy Gillespie, Paquito D’Rivera and many symphony orchestras.
He attributes his diverse sound to travel in Spain, France, Iran, Pakistan and Chile. He has performed all of the major guitar concertos, and is an active transcriber of baroque and South American music.
In addition to the Flat Earth Ensemble, Haque works with the Fareed Haque Group and Garaj Mahal. He has released nine recordings as a group leader, and is an associate professor in jazz and classical guitar studies at Northern Illinois University.
The Flat Earth Ensemble features guitars, saxophone, drums, keyboards, bass and southeast Asian percussion instruments (table and dhol), as well as sitar and Hindustani violin. The group’s album, “Flat Planet,” draws on folk music of Pakistan and India.
