Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Theatre & Dance News Release [3-24-11]

The Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Theatre & Dance will conclude its 2010-2011 mainstage season with the record Tony Award-winning Mel Brooks musical “The Producers,” April 7-16 in the Ted Paul Theatre. It is sponsored by Immanuel St. Joseph’s-Mayo Health System.

With a book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan, and music and lyrics by Brooks, “The Producers” is a musical romp concerning two theatrical producers who scheme to get rich by overselling interests in an assumed Broadway flop. Complications arise when the show unexpectedly turns out to be successful. It features such songs as “Springtime for Hitler” and “I Wanna Be a Producer.”

“The Producers” is directed by Paul J. Hustoles, department chair, with choreography by Paul Finocchiaro, scene design by John David Paul, musical direction by Nick Wayne and costumes by David McCarl. It stars Clayton Rutschow as Max Bialystock (Nathan Lane in the Broadway production) and J. Alexander Coe as Leo Bloom (the role made famous by Matthew Broderick). Rutschow is the current Region V Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship competition’s First Alternate, meaning he took third in January’s regional festival. Coe won a nomination for “Twelfth Night” and played “Antinous” in “The Odyssey.”

The original production opened on Broadway in 2001, ran for 2,502 performances and won a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards, including three for Brooks himself (Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book). Since then, it has become an international sensation, proving humor has no boundaries. To accommodate the department’s trip to Washington, D.C., to present “The Odyssey” at the Kennedy Center, originally scheduled matinees on Saturday, April 16, and Sunday, April 17, have been canceled.

Individual tickets for “The Producers” are $20.00 regular, $18.00 for senior citizens, youth 16 and under and groups of 15 or more and $14.00 for current Minnesota State students. They may be purchased anytime at http://www.mnsu.edu/theatre/, or by calling or visiting the Theatre & Dance Box Office in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center from 4-6 p.m., Monday-Friday; call 507-389-6661.
