“It’s All Mine, but I Stole it Fair and Square” is the theme of Minnesota State Mankato Government Professor Jackie Vieceli’s Frontier Forum Lecture Monday, April 18.

Vieceli will discuss economic and political insights of selected thinkers from six civilizations, including Western Christian, African, Buddhist, Confucian, Hindu and Islamic, in the 32nd annual Frontier Forum Lecture, sponsored by the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences.

The lecture, free and open to students, faculty, staff and the public, will be at 7 p.m. in room 253 of the Centennial Student Union.

Vieceli points out that reconciling the rights of the rich with the just claims of the poor have concerned societies since Aristotle’s time. But modern economic recession, bail-outs, budget cuts and the increasing gap between rich and poor make the issue more pressing than ever.

Marxists have long raised concerns about economic exploitation and the rights of the poor, Vieceli says, but the failure of communist regimes cast doubt on the Marxist model. Capitalism provides material prosperity to many, but creates inequalities and ecological unsustainability.

Vieceli will speculate about whether a third economic model could reconcile the rights of private property with the protection of the common good.
