Single-payer health care advocate to speak April 14

David Himmelstein, a leader in the movement for single-payer health care, will discuss the case for publicly funded Medicare-for-all on Thursday, April 14, at Minnesota State Mankato.

His lecture, free and open to students, faculty, staff and the public, will be from 7-9 p.m. in the Centennial Student Union Room 253. The event is sponsored by the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences and the College of Allied Health & Nursing.

Himmelstein has testified before Congress and has appeared as a guest on PBS’ “McNeill/Lehrer News Hour.” His research has been published internationally and in the U.S. by medical journals including the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Himmelstein is associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and co-founder of Physicians for a National Health Program. He serves as chief of the division of social and community medicine at Cambridge Hospital, where he practices primary care internal medicine.
