Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Jazz Mavericks and Jazz Singers earned high regional awards recently at the Eau Claire (Wis.) Jazz Festival.

The university’s Jazz Mavericks took second place in the festival’s April 8-9 big-band competition with institutions from throughout the Midwest, and the Jazz Singers earned a superior rating (97 of a possible100) in vocal competition.

Minnesota State Mankato jazz studies faculty member Douglas Snapp directs both groups.

As part of the festival, members of the university groups took part in clinics conducted by nationally recognized jazz musicians and educators. Clinics included instrument-specific classes, lessons on improvisation, jazz mechanics and music composition.

Renowned saxophonist Eric Marienthal and Latin drumming sensation Bobby Sanabria headlined a Saturday evening festival concert. The Hornheads and the United States Air Force Band of Mid America, “Shades of Blue,” also appeared during the four-day event.

Minnesota State Mankato, a comprehensive, doctoral university with 15,393 students, is part of the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities system, which comprises 32 state institutions.
