A healthy 23 percent of the student body showed up at the Minnesota State Mankato polls on Tuesday, and the majority voted in favor of a non-binding referendum that will save four intercollegiate sports from elimination.

Men’s swimming, women’s bowling and men’s and women’s tennis were all put on the chopping block last fall when the athletic department tried to deal with an upcoming budget shortfall.

The student senate will now present the results of the referendum to Minnesota State Mankato President Richard Davenport, and he will have the final say. With the school year ending in early May, Davenport is expected to announce his decision soon.
