Dave Cowan, facilities services director at Minnesota State University, Mankato, received the 2011 Distinguished Alumni Fitterer Service Award from the university last week.
Cowan, of Mankato, is one of nine alumni who are 2011 award winners. He was honored at an April 29 dinner and ceremony hosted by the Minnesota State Mankato Alumni Association.
Fitterer Service Awards go to graduates who have given distinguished service to Minnesota State Mankato and have used their time, treasure and talents to preserve and promote university programs.
Cowan graduated in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree in political science, and in the 40 years since then has served the campus community in a number of capacities.
He is an avid supporter of Maverick athletics, serves on the boards of the Hoops and Blue Line Clubs, and supports Theatre & Dance, Urban & Regional Studies and the Alumni Association.
In 2009 he chaired the annual Campus Drive, rallying faculty and staff to pledge more money in support of the University than in any previous year. He also is an active community volunteer, helping the homeless and volunteering at Camp Patterson on Lake Washington.
As facilities services director, Cowan also is the campus “parking guru,” overseeing a team of students who manage traffic flow during major university events.
