Mary Story receives Distinguished Alumni Award

Mary Story, Minneapolis, received the 2011 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from Minnesota State University, Mankato last week.
Story, associate dean for student life at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health and an epidemiology and community health professor, is one of nine alumni who are 2011 award winners. She was honored at an April 29 dinner and ceremony hosted by the Minnesota State Mankato Alumni Association.
Alumni Achievement Awards go to graduates who have achieved high rank or honor in their professions and have had a major impact on their communities.
A first-generation college student, Story graduated in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in home economics. She earned a master’s degree in food science from the University of Tennessee in 1977 and a Ph.D. in nutrition science from Florida State University in 1980.
A professor for the University of Minnesota’s Division of Epidemiology and Community Health as well as the associate dean, she also directs the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s national program office for healthy eating research.
Her focus is child and adolescent nutrition and obesity prevention, and she serves on numerous national and state committees and publishes and lectures extensively. She recently was elected to the National Academies Institute of Medicine, and received the 2009 Medallion Award from the American Dietetic Association.
